Staying Cool in the Summer

If you live someplace that gets very hot during the summer than you know how hard it is to stay comfortable. Dripping with sweat and sticky to the sheets, you feel awful and that ruins your day from the start. These are some simple adjustments you can make to make the summer more bearable.

Of course you can use our ceiling fans and air-conditioner to cool down the house but that adds up really fast and some of us don’t like using AC because of the environmental impact. But take another look at those flush mount ceiling fans. How old are they? Are the efficient at moving air or are they just spinning up there and not doing much at all?

Look into more efficient, but cheap ceiling fans. There are a lot of great designs on the market that look classy and move air more effectively. The design of the blades makes a huge difference and the old designs are just awful.
You should also check that your ceiling fans are set to blow air downward. In the winter you want the fans set so they create convection but don’t blow air on you. In the summer you want them to do the opposite. The convection effect is the same but the air passing directly hitting you makes a huge difference.

If you plan to use air-conditioning then you should look into the efficiency of your windows and doors. You’ be surprised how much of a difference some weather stripping tape and proper insulation can make. I suggest having one room that is sealed up like a vault and that is the one room you use the AC in. If you have a den you can use weather sealing packages designed for the winter to keep the cold in that one room and make it the common room for everyone. This way you reduce your costs, don’t lose as much of the cold air to the rest of the house that nobody is in and draw the family together. Even if it’s just to escape the heat it’s still a good excuse to have everyone around.

Lastly, make sure that the blades of any ceiling fans or room fans that you have a clean. Dirty blades are less efficient and will spread dust everywhere when you turn them on. That’s just gross and you don’t want to get anyone sick.
